For this assignment I went to Gutierrez restaurant in Leona Valley, California. The space is very open and family oriented. There were a couple of families their waiting to enjoy their food. While observing them I noticed the amount of times they would use technology. Many of the people sitting down would stay on their cell phones for long periods of time and not say anything to the people that they were eating with. No one would talk to one another, and if they did it would only be in a brief sentences. And those brief sentences would have to do with what was on their phone. They would be on their cell phones while ordering, while waiting, and even while eating. A friend that I was eating lunch with even went on her phone to play games because she had no cell service. The people in the restaurant spend about seventy five percent of their time on their cellphones instead of focusing on one another. Technology seems to be a lifeline for most people. It’s a way to communicate with people without having to see them. Yet technology also isolates people from one another. Instead of talking to the person they were eating with, both would mutually ignore each other and focus on their phones. I believe that humans do not know how to communicate without technology. Our society has become so dependent on technology that we cannot form simple relationships and conversations anymore. Technology has taken over society and humans have become entirely too dependent on it.
The Anti-Social Network is a short film about human’s addiction to their phones and social media. The film starts out with the main character Lucas, who spends all of his time on Facebook. Lucas sees his everyday interactions similar to Facebook. When he likes someone the like button appears, and when he stops talking to someone it say (Blank) left the conversation. He cannot wake up without sending a good morning post, and he documents every part of his day. He does not interact with the people around him unless it has to do with social media. He then meets a young woman whom he is interested in however, the woman does not uses social media. Because the woman does not uses social media Lucas must change his habit of not interacting with other people. However, his attempts are not successful when the duo on a date. Lucas takes pictures of his food and ultimately ignores the woman. When she tries to disconnect him form social media and focus in the now, it does not work. She angrily leaves and Lucas is left to ponder his actions. After social media breaks down the two recoil. That is until Lucas ask the woman if she has a twitter. The film was very informative about social media addiction. Lucas did not have personal interactions with people face to face. He spent most of his day on Facebook and ignoring the people around him. Even when he loses a love interest, he is still more concerned about updating his post. I think it shows how addicted people are to the internet. It allows people to have relationships without working for it. And when social media is compromised, people act chaotic. Instead of focusing on the now and enjoying life, people are more worried about telling others what they are doing. Technology now controls our society, and that will likely never change.
In the movie Barton Fink by Joel and Ethan Coen, the main character Charlie is psychotic. We are first introduced to Charlie when the other main character Barton make a noise complaint against Charlie. The two were neighbors in a hotel that Barton recently arrived at. Charlie then confronts Barton in an aggressive matter, later however the two become good friends. Charlie helps Barton with his manuscript and tries to give him advice. We later find out that Charlie is really a man named Karl Mundt. Karl is a serial killer who killed Barton’s lover in the middle of the movie. He disappears for a while, however when he does come back he sets the hotel on fire. He talks to Barton and confesses to him on why he has murdered so many people. In the movie the main setting is the hotel, which we latter discover is a symbol of Charlie’s mind. The hotel is a rundown old dirty place that Charlie must live in. He is the only person that is occupying the hotel with the exception of the new resident Barton. The hotel wallpaper peels very easily and there are always strange noises being made. It symbolizes Charlie’s emotional and mental state. The wallpaper is a symbol of his mental state deteriorating. He hurts other people and his mind is not all there. As the movie continued it became obvious that he is mentally trapped in his mind. Charlie admits to Barton that the reason why he kills people is to help them. The world is a cruel place and he does not want them to suffer more than they already have. He honestly believes that he is doing a good deed by killing people. He even went as far as to say he wished that someone would do him the same favor. By saying this Charlie is revealing to the audience that he lives a life that he no longer wants to live. He no longer want to feel the constant pain that he is in. He contains himself in the hotel as a way to isolate himself from the world. It is his comfort spot, his place to think and be by himself. He was fine until Barton complained about the noise level coming from his room. He gives Barton a second chance, but when Barton does not listen he goes on a killing spree. His first victim in the movie is Audrey Taylor also known as Barton’s secret lover whom he kills and beheads. Then he kills someone else in Los Feilez. At the end of the movie Charlie kills two police officers, both of which were trying to arrest him on multiple counts of murder. He has a chance to kill Barton, but he does not do so. Perhaps he felt sympathy and did not want to kill his friend, or maybe he was so angry at Barton that he wanted him to live a life of pain. Though it is not a common opinion, I feel rather bad for Charlie. He has obviously went through a lot of pain and loneliness in his life, and wants it all to stop. He thinks that he is helping people, when obviously he does more damage than good. He is a victim of his own mind and cannot seek help. Charlie is a true definition of being trapped. The fictional city that I have chosen my assignment on is based on the novel Fahrenheit 451. Though the city is never named I feel as though it its an important form of society to talk about. for the purpose of this assignment I will name the city Fahrenheit city. Fahrenheit city appears in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and was in a low budget film. What makes Fahrenheit extremely unique is there strict censorship laws. The local government controls everything that the inhabitants do and watch. This makes the inhabitants very dull people who live their lives according to society rules and regulation. The people of Fahrenheit city can best be compared to robots. They follow the same routine everyday and never change things up. They rarely show emotion, and if they do it is to show disapproval of another citizen. The main law in Fahrenheit city is the banning of books. They believe that books will bring knowledge to the citizens, which in turn will start a rebellion. Fahrenheit city is an essential part of the novel. The main plot to Fahrenheit 451 is the effects that censorship has on a society, and how one man rebels against that. Without Fahrenheit city, the novel would not make sense and there would be no story. Fahrenheit city is one of the worst cities that i have read about. The censorship along with the need to be perfect drives many of the inhabitants to commit suicide. On average ten people a night killed themselves. I understand why the government felt it was best to censor people. However in the end it caused more problems than it cured. I chose Fahrenheit city because I believe that censorship is a key aspect in the destruction of a society.
